John F. Simon Jr. - Every Icon #374

Every Icon #374

Le Random Logo

Every Icon is an iconic series from John F. Simon Jr. exploring the near-infinite compositions of a 32x32 grid of black and white squares. Originally developed in the late 90s, the software-based project investigated the idea of a system that could theoretically generate every image in existence. It would take the system 5.85 billion years to run through every possible composition just in the second row, inducing an enduring nature for the project to outlive mankind. The piece focuses on the mechanic ability to generate rather than the visual ability to represent, allowing the viewer to act as the interpreter each composition. To add to the longevity of the system, Simon Jr. collaborated with the Divergence team to store the script fully on-chain using Solidity programming language. Garnering institutional recognition since it’s conception, the project has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the globe including the 2000 Whitney Biennial.
